En consulta con el Director General de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), el Director General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO), Dr. Jacques Diouf, ha nombrado al Sr. Kazuaki Miyagishima, Secretario de la Comisión Mixta FAO/OMS del Codex Alimentarius (ESNC), que tomará efecto desde el 1 de octubre de 2003.

Mr Miyagishima, a national of Japan, holds a degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and an International Diploma in Public Administration from the Ecole Nationale d'Administration, Paris, France.

From 1986 to 1994, Mr Miyagishima worked with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japan, as Senior Officer for Maternal and Child Health, Assistant Director for Community Health, Deputy Director for Health Personnel, and Deputy Director for International Affairs. In 1994 he joined the World Health Organization, Geneva, where he worked in the area of food safety, collaborating with the Codex Secretariat and the World Trade Organization to ensure greater involvement of developing countries in Codex activities and assisting countries to meet Codex standards, guidelines and other recommendations. He was also assigned as a WHO staff member in the Codex Secretariat in Rome on a part-time basis.

Since 1998, Mr Miyagishima has been Associate Professor, Health Policy and Administration, in the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University, Japan, where he was a member of the Ministerial Committee on International Aspects of Food Safety, the National Council of Pharmaceutical Affairs and Food Safety in the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and the National Council on Standardization of Agricultural Commodities in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. He has specialized in Codex matters, in the safety assessment of genetically modified foods, and in labelling of foods.
